Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative (MVEC) is seeking an Engineering Technician.



The Engineering Technician will provide support to MVEC’s Engineering Manager in preparation of studies, AutoCAD support for plans and specifications of substations, along with line specifications, design, contract preparation and equipment procurement.



  • Provide Microsoft Office & AutoCAD support for reports and design projects for MVEC

  • Provide support for distribution line, substation and generation design services for MVEC & clients.

  • Work with AutoCAD to lay out substations and substation modifications.

  • Work with the Engineering Manager on procurement of substation materials. This includes, but is not limited to writing specifications and developing drawings, including wiring diagrams.

  • Must be organized and maintain and develop documentation structure for substation records.

  • Provide assistance for technical related portions of the construction work plans, long-range plans,   sectionalizing studies, RUS contracts and reports and other related studies.

  • Work with MVEC Engineering staff on developing a GIS-based Inspection Platform.

  • Provide support in developing construction design standards.

  • Support the Preparation of line construction contracts for distribution and distribution substations.

  • Assist in preparation of cost estimates for various distribution and transmission related studies.

  • Assist with GIS Mapping via Milsoft Mapping & Modeling.

  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of other plans & specifications, along with studies and reports, as necessary.

  • Conduct independent research and perform other related duties as necessary.



    Education and Experience:

    Position requires one of the following:

  • Four (4) year Engineering degree with two years plus electrical utility engineering experience related to the above requirements, or

  • Two (2) year Engineering Technology Associate degree with knowledge typically acquired through a two-year degree in electrical technology or Computer Aided Drafting along a minimum of five years of related job experience as outlined above, or

  • Ten (10) year Engineering work experience in the areas of AutoCAD, Milsoft Mapping and Modeling, ESRI Mapping, Microsoft Office, FIS & CIS experience, RUS Documentation, Stake Out-Work Studio experience.


    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must have a basic knowledge of distribution system engineering technology, construction and operations.

  •  Must be able to become familiar with safety codes, Rural Utilities Service (RUS) requirements, and other standards that apply.

  •  Must have well-developed communication skills, including oral, written, plotter skills, facilitation and negotiation skills.

  •  Must be able to organize a project into defined tasks and carry it out in a timely manner.

  •  Must have good analytical, interpretative, interpersonal, complex problem-solving and decision-making skills.

  •  Must be familiar with Microsoft Office products, AutoCAD and Milsoft /ESRI Mapping.
