The Minnesota Rural Electric Association (MREA) along with seventy-three representatives from Minnesota’s electric cooperatives have joined more than 2,100 other electric co-op leaders in Washington, D.C.

They kicked off the conference today with a Legislative Luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill.

The trip is part of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s Legislative Conference. “The nation’s more than 900 electric cooperatives play an important role in the communities they serve, and we’re all committed to the same fundamental mission - powering and empowering our consumer-owners,” said Darrick Moe, MREA President and CEO. “It’s critical that our elected officials in Washington hear from the Minnesota co-ops as they make decisions that impact our ability to continue that mission.”

The Minn. co-op representatives will discuss priority issues with Senators Franken and Klobuchar, Congressmen Peterson, Walz, Nolan and Emmer and administrative staffers from the offices of Ellison, Paulsen, and Lewis. These visits are valuable opportunities to educate the policymakers on the unique benefits of the locally-controlled, consumer-owned, cooperative business structure. Co-ops will also call on lawmakers to support investments in rural infrastructure, reduce barriers to maintenance and expansion, and renew tax credits for geothermal, nuclear and other technologies.
