Day Two (9:00-3:30) will be spent learning what it means to be part of a cooperative. Everything from the onset of capital credits up through our most current and pertinent energy issues (and many topics in between!) will be covered. 9:15      History of “Power for the People” – Sarah Bullock, Regional Vice President, National Rural Electric Cooperative Finance Corporation, CFC

This session will cover a history of the electric industry, the difference between private and public power and why our industry was built the way it was.

10 minutes – working through the ‘Who Does What’ sheet at your tables and then we will talk through as a group

10:15    Co-op Family Values & Culture – Shari Wormwood

The cooperative business model is unique and takes many forms in the world around us. If a customer asked you the difference between getting their electricity from a co-op, could you answer? Could you articulate the benefits of cooperative ownership? Really, why does it all matter, isn’t it just a job?

 

Group Quiz & Activity: Co-op Awareness & Design Your Co-op

30 minutes – 1) work through the ‘Co-op Awareness Quiz’ 2) come up with a co-op concept and name, a little “arts & craft” time with a logo 3) Select work positions for the co-op among group members 4) Finally have the GM represent your group as spokesperson and briefly give a description or the co-op.

CFC, MREA, NRECA, RUS, Federated Insurance, G&Ts – seriously, why are there so many related organizations and why are their names a bunch of letters? What do all the letters mean, why do the organizations exist and how are they related?

Non-utilities like Comcast, Apple, Best Buy and Google are shaping what your co-op member will want in their home. Let’s have a conversation about how we (the industry) got here and how can co-ops adapt to continue to offer service to our members.

How do generation and transmission cooperatives fit into the picture? The basics of how electricity is generated, transmitted and distributed to the member (customer) at the end of the line. Power supply trends, fuel choices, generation mix, electricity prices, and grid interconnections -  lots to cover in this “meaty” session.
