Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative (MVEC), a progressive south metro member-owned utility with 90 employees, is seeking two full-time Substation Apparatus Technicians.

 

POSITION SUMMARY: Maintain and install control equipment, load management equipment, metering equipment, and perform power quality studies in a safe, accurate, and timely manner. Provide MVEC customers, area contractors, and local utilities with safe and reliable service.    

           

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:               

  • Performs assigned work as Substation/Apparatus Technician with minimal supervision. This shall include the operation, installation, maintaining, and trouble-shooting of line/substation equipment, substation test equipment, load management equipment, stray voltage equipment, and radio equipment. Provides guidance to genset accounts. Performs testing and diagnosis of power quality problems and stray voltage issues. These shall follow MVEC specifications, safety rules, and general operating procedures.

  • Follows established steps and procedures as directed, checking if necessary with a Supervisor when a departure from established methods or orders is imminent.

  • Assists in the work with line crews in emergency situations when called upon.

  • Assists in the Groundsmen capacity as needed.

  • Assists in the maintenance of general plant repairs when needed.

  • Installs necessary programs and maintaining them to assure proper use.

  • Trains line personnel on working of control equipment as needed.

  • Performs substation and line equipment monthly inspections properly and accurately.

  • Performs testing procedure of substation power transformers and associated equipment to manufacturer’s recommended testing procedure with documentation of equipment performance. 

  • Performs testing on protection equipment to assure its functionality meets MVEC system standards.

  • Program, test, validate, and improve MVEC SCADA system to provide accurate leading-edge technology.

  • Provides Operations Manager and Engineering Manager results and recommendations from testing.

  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the Operations and Engineering Manager.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education and Experience:

  • Two years college or vocational school in Electrical Maintenance, Electric Utility Technician, or five years’ experience in an equivalent field.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Works outdoors with physical exertion, often in poor weather conditions. Occasionally lifts materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts items that weigh up to 100 pounds. Shovels dirt, works around noisy equipment, and visually inspects work for safe connections.

  • Occasionally works at night, on weekends, and holidays to repair or install line equipment, or perform load management repairs, and metering issues. Interacts with crew members, Foremen, and Supervisors via verbal communication. Works on uneven terrain in fields and along roads, occasionally encountering vehicular traffic.
