Substation Manager

East River Electric Power Cooperative is looking for an individual with utility experience to lead the substation team responsible for the construction, maintenance and operation for our electrical substation facilities.  The ideal candidate will have proven leadership experience with an electric utility.   

East River Electric is a not-for-profit generation and transmission cooperative with a service area that covers 40,000 square miles. We deliver wholesale power to our members, which include 24 rural electric distribution cooperatives and one municipally-owned electric system in eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota. Our members, in turn, power the properties of the member-owners in their service territories.

This job opportunity is located at our main campus in Madison, South Dakota. Madison boasts a family-friendly, small town atmosphere with a wealth of modern amenities including the new Madison Regional Hospital, the high-tech campus of Dakota State University, a thriving community center and more. Key responsibilities include:

  • Guide the development and implementation of operating procedures and practices to successfully manage the cooperative's substation facilities.
  • Provide technical support and analysis of substation misoperations.
  • Direct the development of an annual budget and work plan to accomplish the cooperative's strategic goals.  
  • Cultivate positive working relationships with employees, member systems and other utility partners.     

Key requirements include:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical field.
  • At least five or more years of progressively responsible experience in the areas of substation construction and maintenance and/or utility operations.
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered.  
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to positively influence others to accomplish team goals.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office products and computer technology.
