Great River Energy is seeking a maintenance mechanic to provide routine/preventative and emergency maintenance on mechanical equipment ensure safe, efficient and reliable electric plant operation. Provide guidance, maintenance management and make recommendations to ensure continuous process improvement.



Performs complex overhauls, predictive, preventive, and breakdown maintenance on a variety of complex mechanical equipment to ensure plant availability and to maximize plant efficiency. Equipment includes, but is not limited to:

  • Pumps                                 Valves
  • Gearboxes                          Motors
  • Scrubbers                           Precipitators
  • Equipment alignments    Rigging
  • Welding                              Fabrication
  • Print reading                      Boilers
  • Conveyers

Coordinates the planning, implementation, startup and long-term operations of new equipment and systems to facilitate safe, accurate and efficient operations.

  • Acts as primary contact for vendors.
  • Acts as job leader interface for contractors and temporary employees and provides support to craft and non-craft employees.
  • Provides direction for project budgets.
  • Develops project schedules and ensures timely project completion.
  • Provides technical support for engineering and operations.
  • Drive GRE vehicle to other sites.

Manages all aspects of existing equipment and process maintenance for assigned plant area while ensuring safe and reliable operations.

  • Installs new replacement mechanical equipment and related components.
  • Recommends spare parts inventory and continuous improvements to maximize efficiency and availability.
  • Assists in budget preparation.

Maintains proficiency through continuous learning and regulatory compliance from various agencies to ensure safety to self, others, and equipment. Agencies include, but are not limited to: NFPA, OSHA, EPA, and the State Department of Health.

  • Identifies and recommends skill specific training to enhance knowledge and skills for required safety regulatory processes and/or system technologies as needed by plant areas.
  • Participates in training and completes qualifications to support state and federal requirements.

Provide routine and emergency maintenance on plant site equipment, systems and piping; including:

  • Perform complex overhauls, predictive, preventative, and breakdown maintenance on a variety of complex mechanical equipment to ensure plant availability.
  • Coordinate the planning, implementation, start-up and long term operation of new equipment and systems to facilitate safe, accurate and efficient operations.
  • Operate acetylene and arc welding equipment, and other required equipment in a skillful, safe manner.
  • Perform rigging, scaffolding and minor building repairs.
  • Proper and safe operation of cranes and hoists.
  • Follow rigging and scaffolding stands and setup procedures.
  • Cleans and maintains assigned equipment to provide safe working conditions and optimize to equipment efficiency.
  • Develops and manages long term preventative maintenance programs.
  • Write detailed work orders for equipment repair as required.

Utilizes, maintains, and updates detailed maintenance documentation records needed to support a safe and professional work environment. Documentation records include, but are not limited to:

  • P&IDS                                Vendor prints
  • Manuals                            Overhaul or rebuild reports
  • Calibration                        Logs
  • Computerized Maintenance Management System
  • Regulatory and Environmental compliance records



E   Education & Experience

A two year Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Mechanical Maintenance Technology or vocational or technical training in the various phases of mechanical maintenance, welding, and/or pipefitting; and/or the equivalent combination of experience required. Three years of fossil fuel power plant mechanic or equivalent experience in a mechanical maintenance field is preferred. Must have a valid driver’s license.


K    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in plant equipment and process knowledge.
  • Knowledge and skills needed to perform all aspects of mechanical maintenance, in a complex industrial electric plant, including maintenance management activities for immediate and long-term needs.
  • Skills in Microsoft Office and Maximo along with other computer applications for record keeping.
  • Skills in communication, both verbal and written to effectively.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex equipment and systems.
  • Ability to ensure compliance with inventory policies and procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret vendor and manufacture schematics and instruction manuals, plant procedures and work practices.
  • Ability to learn, interpret and adhere to GRE standards, safety procedures, regulatory and environmental compliance practices in support of GRE’s safety program, environmental management system and Coal Creek Station’s Mechanical safety program.
  • Ability to provide job direction and project coordination for all new and existing projects.
  • Ability to independently plan, organize, prioritize time and workload to accomplish tasks.
  • Ability to self-motivate while working independently and/or as part of a team.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective work relationships, both internal and external, and establish credibility with employees.
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing business circumstances; must be able to thrive in constantly changing business environment.
