More than 1,800 students from 43 states will take part in the Electric Co-op Youth Tour experience next week in Washington, D.C. This unique trip will give high school students the opportunity to dive into the national history, as they explore the museums, memorials, and monuments. They also spend time meeting with Representatives and Senators and get to network with students from nearly every other state, hear dynamic speakers and leaders and learn about cooperatives.

Here in Minnesota, the planning for this trip takes place all year, and this week is crunch time as MREA is cross-checking every detail. Gayle Karol, MREA’s marketing and event coordinator and YT Director will be leading 40 students from among our membership and fly to our nation’s capital on Saturday morning for the week-long tour. MREA would like to thank the members who support the trip by sponsoring students and sending chaperones. This year, Gayle will be accompanied by four co-op employees:

·        Peter Nelson, Freeborn-Mower

·        Annie Hoiland, MiEnergy

·        Angela Lyseng, Beltrami Electric Co-op

·        Desiree Cuda, East Central Energy

Each of the states that participate plan and coordinate for their own states’ member students. And much in the same way that co-ops are unique (as the saying goes – “if you’ve seen one co-op, you’ve seen one co-op!”) each state’s Youth Tour is planned and executed to fit the needs of that state’s electric cooperatives. Some states fly to Washington D.C., and others take long bus trips. States, like our neighbor Wisconsin, bring 13 students, and others, like Texas and Tennessee, coordinate their trip for over 140 high schoolers. In fact, check out the video showing the recent publicity that surrounded the Tennessee Youth Tour

What ends up being the same, is that teenagers from across the nation share a life-changing trip, bonded together by the framework of electric cooperatives!
