National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week is April 8-12, which will kick off promotions throughout the summer to remind drivers they need to slow down and remove distraction to keep our workers safe.

Each year, workers across the country are at serious risk of death or injury during the "100 Deadly Days of Summer" between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The latest national statistics from 2015 tell us:

  • There were 96,000 work zone crashes, up 7.8 percent from 2014
  • A work zone crash occurred once every 5.4 minutes
  • Each day, at least 70 work zone crashes involved an injury
  • Each week, at least 12 work zone crashes resulted in a fatality

As Minnesotans welcome summer, workers making needed repairs and improvements in our state's roads and other infrastructure know they face daily danger from drivers who fail to slow down and pay attention. Electric cooperatives and vendor members can make a huge impact by taking these simple steps to promote work zone safety awareness:

  • Follow the Minnesota Safety Council's Facebook page and share posts with your friends and coworkers
  • Celebrate "Go Orange Day" on April 10 at work and all employees to wear orange
  • Share a video testimonial about a close call or an experience working on the side of a road. (A short template will be provided to Minnesota co-ops.)
  • Share the Minnesota Safety Council Public Service Announcement video, to be released in May
  • Highlight work zone safety as a theme for your co-op entry in a local parade
