Traverse Electric Linemen Show Community Commitment

Traverse Electric Cooperative Linemen hosted more than 50 fire fighters and EMTs to provide training and demonstrations on the evening of July 19. They used their portable safety trailer to demonstrate the different ways electrical contacts are made and the results of an unintended electrical contact. The trailer is a model of their grid and is powered by an electrical generator so the current on the lines is very similar to the lines on their system.

The situations that Rick Davis, Terry Ehli and Chris Falk, in photo to left, educated the audience about were accidental contact with overhead lines, energized lines on cars and farm equipment. They explained what to do if involved with downed power lines. The main message was to never assume a line is dead and never get out of a vehicle if there is a power line in contact with a vehicle. Always wait for the Traverse Electric Linemen to arrive.

Lineman Chris Falk warned the crowd that approaching a car with someone trapped inside could result in two fatalities, while calling 911 and waiting for the utility truck could save a life. Rick Davis commented on how getting farm equipment tangled up in power lines is more common these days because of the big sprayers and tillage tools. A hands-on demonstration of the rubber glove insulation was given by Terry Ehli, followed by a very active question-and-answer session.

The safety trailer is a joint effort of ownership with Traverse Electric and four other electric co-ops in the area. They have been exhibiting it at county fairs and they hope to attend the area farm shows next winter.

Providing safety training and education to volunteers helps to make their communities better places in which to live. This is Traverse Electric’s example of their Commitment to Community.
